A Guide to Essaouira Morocco

Essaouira is located in western Morocco set on the jagged cliffs of the Atlantic Ocean and is a welcome break from the hustle and bustle of the city. Tourists flock to this beautiful town because of it’s relaxed coastal feel. It is perfect ending to a cultural Morocco tour

But there is so much more to Essaouira, there is plenty of things to do and the biggest advantage is that the best way to get around is to walk. It’s not a large town so you can easily get to all attractions on foot.

The Medina
You can’t miss the Medina which is protected by high walls. Access is relatively easy, there are five gates to choose from and once inside you will find a clean piece of history for you to enjoy. Whether you just want to wander around and soak up the beautiful architecture or you want to do some bargaining at the souks, the Medina is the place to go.

The souks at the Essaouira Medina are really easy to navigate and they are filled with amazing aromas, bright colors and an electric feel. You can purchase just about anything whether you are looking for souvenirs or gifts for family back home.

The Port
The port of Essaouira is popular for leisurely walks, you can wander round and watch the small fishing boats as they go about their business. Breathe in the fresh sea air and just enjoy the relaxed atmosphere.

The Beach
Being on the Atlantic Ocean there is a beautiful beach here, though the water is cold being the Atlantic and it can get a little windy. The beach is very popular with surfers and kite surfers, you’ll find locals playing soccer on the beach and plenty of walkers wandering along the sandy shoreline.

Essaouira has no shortage of wonderful places to eat and relax, it’s a place where you can really soak up the beauty of Morocco, put your feet up and recharge before returning to the bustle of the city.
