I want to thank you for all your assistance, guidance and patience in planning our ideal trip to Morocco. You are both such a pleasure to work with.
From my initial contact, Brian was accommodating and acquiesced to my every wish and whim. Whether it was wanting to fly in and out of the same city or having to change departure dates, nothing was ever an issue. The trip was perfectly paced with enough time to wander on our own, rest or sit in an outdoor cafe and watch the world go by.
Amy on the administrative end was always lovely, professional, efficient, and friendly with every communication. No request or change was ever an inconvenience. All adjustments and questions were addressed cheerfully, all the while assuaging any apprehension that logistics in Morocco would run seamlessly and indeed they did! She even followed up with me to ensure that I had received the comprehensive packet that E.I.T. sends out to all their travelers before each journey explaining every conceivable norm and more in Moroccan culture from tipping to dressing appropriately to every thing you don’t think of! Also included were company emergency contacts and embassy information. We arrived well prepared! Experience It Tours is a well run organization with years of experience in guiding travelers through Morocco and I would recommend them without hesitation!
It would be difficult to pinpoint a particular highlight as every day was different and each became more magical as the trip unfolded. Each city spoke its own beautiful story in its own unique language; the wide modern boulevards of Casablanca lined with palm trees, and bougainvillea, home to the Majestic Hassan ll overlooking the Atlantic Ocean, like a beacon, elegant Rabat and the Casbah of the Oudayas with its tranquil Andalusian gardens and white washed buildings, the vibrant blue hues of medieval Chefchauon sequestered in the serenity of the Rif Mountains and the stately, ancient Roman ruins of Volubilis sporting her Golden Arches and well preserved mosaics floors. Then there is the magnificent Meknes with its 48 mosaic covered gates glittering in the Moroccan sun and beautiful, bustling Fes built in three periods, offering a visitor the modernity of the Ville Nouvelle to the labyrinthine souks in the medina beckoning a bygone era. Finally, the sensual overload of the chaotic, cacophony of sight, sound and smell of the terra-cotta city, Marrakech. It is impossible to be partial, you just have to embrace them all!
I don’t want to omit the lovely, friendly, warm welcoming Moroccan people we met along the way in each of these cities and I must call attention to one in particular.
I suppose much of this wonder is due to having the benefit of seeing this beautiful country through the eyes of a proud, passionate Moroccan, our wonderful guide and driver Hamid Zerheri. Hamid, his name means worthy of praise and in his profession, demeanor and the man himself is truly praise worthy. I don’t know how we were so fortunate to have been assigned to Hamid but, we couldn’t have asked for a better guide for this trip.
Hamid is a consummate gentleman and extremely professional. A masterful, skillful technician behind the wheel of a car where we always felt safe and secure in his vehicle. Whether in the busy city streets or on the open highway, Hamid was always steady and in control at the helm. He was always prompt for every pick up and meeting point often appearing like a jinn out of thin air!
However, the bonus was having Hamid as our guide. He was Virgil to our Dante leading us and serving as inspirational sage and teacher through this beautiful, complex mosaic we know as Morocco.
As former teachers, we were impressed with his encyclopedic knowledge of history, economy, geography, culture, religion, and food, and appreciative of his clear, concise explanations. The first lesson was an easy clarification of the dirham to the US dollar. We were relieved to get that piece of practical information out of the way. He also gave each of us a small leather change purse filled with small change in the event we needed to use the bathroom with which to tip the matrons. How thoughtful! How practical! But this was just the beginning, we were to learn, of his mindfulness of our needs and attention to details. He anticipated our every need, whether we thought we needed it or not! He was protective and watchful with us both. He took care of us like family, in particular my husband who has difficulty with stairs and hills. He patiently walked with him and they often looked like two old friends chatting away while I was able to wander. Then there were the Moroccan Arabic lessons which kept us amused through long drives and meals.
Ah, the meals! One of the major attractions of Morocco is its delicious cuisine! Being two foodies my husband and I were ready to feast! Hamid introduced us to all kinds of delicacies from tangy Moroccan salads to traditional soups to a wide array of tagines and tangias. He explained why and how these meals were prepared, even taking us into the cooking area to show us how they were prepared. But if I have one criticism about Hamid it would be that he held out the meshoui until our last day!
Shumalik, Hamid! When I think I could have been enjoying meshoui for nine days…shumalik!
Even the local guides Hamid had arranged for us were interesting, informative and fun.
Hamid carries out every duty with dignity, grace and aplomb. Everything was handled so smoothly, seamlessly, deftly.
I would willingly take another journey through Morocco with Experience It Tours but only if guided by Hamid Zerheri.
Shukran, Hamid! We hope our paths cross with yours again one day.
