Our trip to Morocco was memorable! We had a wonderful time from the very beginning till the very end. Staying at Riads, which were were all very beautiful and comfortable, instead of hotels made us feel more connected with the culture and enhanced our experience.
At the beginning of the trip, Youssef – our gracious driver and guide – asked us about our expectations for this visit. We shared with him we wanted to experience not only the main imperial cities historical sites, but as much as possible, the Moroccan diverse culture. To our benefit, he took it to heart.
On our way to Fes, Youssef suggested to us a stop at a public Hammam built where originally were hot springs. As far as we could tell, we were likely the only foreigners in the whole place. It was a very pleasant cultural experience seeing people of all ages enjoying a public bath, where families helped each other with scrubbing and showering while socializing.
Another great experience was a visit with a nomad Berber family near Ifrane. Their home was very humble yet very clean. They welcomed us with homemade bread and tea which according to my husband was the best bread he ate during the whole trip. It was very touching and really made us think of how much we all have and take for granted when some people have so little and yet manage to be content within their means.
There were so many great sites and experiences that we could spend a lot of time writing about them, however will focus on the ones that left more of an impression.
The visits to Chefchauen, Fes, Marrakesh, Ouarzazat and Essaouira were all great. The medina in Fez with its approximately 10,000 alleys, nooks and crannies, and its exquisite, sprawling market where you find pretty much everything, was really memorable. The Bahia Palace in Marrakesh, as well as the Jardin Majorelle with its Berber museum were very unique and beautiful, worthy the visit. The Village in Ksar de Ait-Ben-Haddou near Ouarzazate was also very impressive. Essaoiura, our last stop, brought us a more relaxed feel and it was a perfect close to a great trip.
The guides were all knowledgeable and provided us with great insight, the only exception being the guide in our visit to the Kasbah de Taourirt, in Ouarzazate. Although he appeared to be knowledgeable of the history of the site, his poor command of the English language was a handicap, but we still enjoyed the visit.
Youssef was most gracious and helpful, going above and beyond not only to make us feel welcome, comfortable and safe, but by also answering lots of questions we posed to him. Furthermore, he gave us a lot of confidence by being a very safe driver. Youssef was certainly a big part of making this trip memorable.
