The best experience we had in Morocco was having Youssef as our guide. His knowledge, his passion for Morocco and its history, his professional nature as a guide, excellent driver and companionship was superb. He made a special trip fabulous! Can’t speak highly enough of him.
Our last night in Fes, Youssef arranged a dinner at a local Dar in the new city. Our host, a retired professor from a local university welcomed us into his home and prepared an array of traditional Moroccan dishes while sitting in their courtyard under a pomegranate tree. It was a true culinary experience with at least a dozen mini courses, including the traditional pastilla. His son, a graduate from Paris in finance was also there and entertained us with stories about his family and life experiences.
Another highlight was when Youssef agreed to take us into the High Atlas Mountains and the Kasbah du Toubkal. This was an unscheduled addition to our tour and Youssef was very accommodating regarding this special request. The drive there alone was an adventure through the back roads of Morocco. It allowed us to see the Moroccan countryside and daily life. His driving abilities were tested successfully!
After a short hike from Imlil to the Kasbah, our final destination presented us at a world class lodge and its spectacular views of Mount Toubkal and the surrounding area. The staff treated us to Moroccan tea and access to their outdoor terrace area. We felt connected to the grandeur of nature in a very unique and peaceful setting.
We can go on and on about various highlights, including the medinas in Marrakesh and Fes on our tour, but no extended trip to Morocco can exclude a camel ride into the Sahara dessert dunes and an overnight stay at a Bedouin tent camp. We travelled for a few hours into a sea of sand dunes, some as a high as 400 feet, and seemingly lost touch with our civilization. That isolated feeling was temporarily broken when Adee, our camelier, answered his cell phone! LOL. We experienced both a sunset and sunrise and slept under the stars in a moonlit sky embraced by the towering dunes.
We covered over a thousand kms in our customized 8 day travels. Some might think this excessive but we truly felt we got a real insight for Morocco’s varied landscapes and its people. We loved it.
