Inside a Private Morocco Tour: Tom & Sarah's Experience

Inside a Private Morocco Tour: Tom & Sarah’s Experience

A story of how two seasoned travelers found their most memorable adventure yet in the Kingdom of Morocco

Day 1: Casablanca – When Worry Meets Reality

Tom squeezed Sarah’s hand as they walked out of Mohammed V Airport into the warm Casablanca air. After thirty years of travel around the world—from Asia’s temples to Norway’s fjords—they thought they’d seen it all. But Morocco? This felt different. This was their first trip to North Africa.

“Look for the sign with our names,” Sarah said, looking through the crowd of drivers holding signs. They walked back and forth twice. No sign. No Hamid.

“Maybe we should have gone with that big tour company,” Tom said, pulling out the emergency contact card their Experience It Tours team had given them.

Sarah called the number. Within two rings, a warm American voice answered: “Hi, this is Jill with Experience It Tours. How can I help you?”

“We can’t find our driver,” Sarah said, trying to stay calm.

“No problem at all—this happens sometimes. What are you wearing? I’ll call Hamid right now.”

Three minutes later, a tall man with kind eyes and a big smile walked up to them. He held a sign that read “Tom & Sarah – Welcome to Morocco!”

“I am so sorry,” Hamid said in perfect English. “I was standing right by the coffee shop. Sometimes the airport is confusing for first-time visitors.”

As they walked to his clean Mercedes van, Tom and Sarah looked at each other. Their biggest worry before the trip—”What if we don’t like our driver?“—was already going away.

Day 2: Casablanca to Marrakech – Learning Starts

“You know,” Hamid said as they drove through the olive groves between Casablanca and Marrakech, “most people think Morocco is all desert. But look around you.”

Sarah looked out at the rolling green hills with old olive trees. “It’s beautiful. We had no idea.”

This was exactly why they’d picked Experience It Tours after months of research. With so many choices—group tours, self-guided trips, different routes—they’d felt lost. But when Lorre, their sales person, had listened to their travel style and made a custom trip plan, everything made sense.

“We wanted expert help,” Tom had told his brother before leaving. “Someone who actually lives there and knows what they’re doing.”

Now, watching Hamid drive the winding roads with ease while sharing stories about Berber culture, Tom knew they’d made the right choice.

Their first riad in Marrakech took their breath away. Walking through a simple wooden door, they found themselves in a courtyard paradise—beautiful tilework, a bubbling fountain, and the smell of orange blossoms.

“Welcome to Riad L’Orangeraie,” the manager said, offering them traditional mint tea. “Your room looks over the garden.”

That evening, as they sat on their private terrace listening to the call to prayer echo across the red city, Sarah turned to Tom. “I think this is going to be special.”

Day 3: Marrakech – Amazing Sights and Sounds

The guided tour of Marrakech was like organized chaos. Their local guide, Mohammed, led them through the Bahia Palace, explaining the beautiful geometric patterns that seemed to dance on every surface.

But it was walking toward Jemaa el-Fna square that truly caught their attention. The sounds hit them first—drums, flutes, and loud conversations in Arabic and French. Then came the smells: grilled meat from the food stalls, sweet pastries, and the earthy smell of henna.

“Stay close,” Mohammed said with a smile as they entered the square. “It’s easy to get lost in the magic.”

Snake charmers played their music while storytellers gathered crowds with big gestures. Sarah found herself watching a woman applying beautiful henna designs, while Tom watched a group of Gnawa musicians whose rhythms seemed to pulse with the heartbeat of the city.

As the sun set, the square changed. Gas lamps flickered to life, and the smell of tagines filled the air. They climbed to a rooftop café, watching the ancient theater unfold below them.

“In all our travels,” Sarah whispered to Tom, “have we ever seen anything quite like this?”

Day 4-5: Into the Atlas Mountains and Desert Dreams

The drive over the High Atlas Mountains showed Morocco’s amazing variety. Hamid had quickly learned what they liked—they loved photo stops, enjoyed learning about local culture, but liked a relaxed pace over rushing between places.

“There,” he said, pulling over at a scenic spot. “Perfect light for photos.”

The Berber villages tucked into the mountainsides looked like they’d been there for hundreds of years—which, Hamid explained, many had been. At Aït Benhaddou, the ancient fortress where many movies had been filmed, they understood why Hollywood kept coming back to Morocco.

But nothing prepared them for their first look at the Sahara dunes.

“Oh wow!” Sarah said as the golden peaks of Erg Chebbi appeared ahead. “Tom, look at this.”

The camel ride at sunset was everything they’d dreamed and more. As Patricia from another Experience It Tours group had written, “There’s no way that a movie or photos can compare to actually being in the middle of the dunes.”

That night, lying in their luxury desert tent under more stars than they’d ever seen, Tom reached for Sarah’s hand. “We’ve traveled to sixty countries,” he said quietly. “But this… this feels like the trip of a lifetime.”

Day 6: Sahara to Fes – The Long Road North

The drive from the desert to Fes was long but never boring. Hamid had become more than their driver—he was their cultural guide, their safety net, and more and more, their friend.

“Tell us about your family,” Sarah asked as they wound through the Middle Atlas Mountains.

For the next hour, Hamid shared stories about his children, his hopes for Morocco’s future, and his pride in showing visitors the real Morocco. They stopped for lunch in Midelt, where the smell of grilled kebabs drew them to a local restaurant Hamid suggested.

“The tourists don’t usually come here,” he said with a grin. “But the food is the best in town.”

He was right. The tagine was perfectly spiced, the bread fresh and warm, and the welcome was real. As they ate, Tom realized this was exactly what they’d hoped for—real experiences that went beyond the typical tourist trail.

Day 7: Fes – When 9,000 Streets Become an Adventure

Their first evening in Fes, Tom and Sarah decided to explore the medina on their own. “We’re experienced travelers,” Tom had said confidently. “How hard can it be?”

Thirty minutes later, completely lost in a maze of narrow alleys, they understood why Fes medina was called the world’s largest car-free urban area. With over 9,000 streets and alleys, it was a puzzle that had defeated even experienced explorers.

“Excuse me,” Sarah asked a shopkeeper in broken French, “the way to our riad?”

The kind man pointed in three different directions, clearly as confused as they were.

They eventually found their way back, laughing at their adventure. The next day’s guided tour with a local expert showed the medina’s secrets—the ancient tanneries where leather had been processed for hundreds of years, the Bou Inania Madrasa with its stunning architecture, and the busy souks where craftsmen still practiced skills passed down through generations.

“I’m so glad we have proper guidance,” Sarah told their guide. “We would have missed all of this wandering on our own.”

Day 8-9: Chefchaouen – The Blue Pearl

The drive to Chefchaouen took them through changing landscapes—from the plains around Fes to the rolling hills of the Rif Mountains. Hamid had noticed their love of photography and made several unplanned stops at scenic viewpoints.

“This is not on the schedule,” he said with a smile, “but I think you will like this view.”

He was always right.

Chefchaouen itself was like stepping into a fairy tale. The blue-washed buildings created a dreamlike feeling that had Sarah reaching for her camera every few steps. They spent their free day wandering the peaceful streets, sipping mint tea at sidewalk cafés, and watching local life unfold at a gentle pace.

“It’s so different from Marrakech,” Tom said. “Same country, completely different energy.”

“That’s Morocco,” Hamid explained. “Every city has its own personality.”

Day 10: Chefchaouen to Tangier – Getting Close to the End

As they drove toward Tangier, Sarah felt a familiar feeling—the bittersweet emotion that comes at the end of a perfect trip. Over ten days, Morocco had beaten every expectation. But more than that, they’d made a real friendship with Hamid.

“You know,” Tom said as they got close to the port city, “we were worried about spending eleven days with a stranger. Instead, we’re saying goodbye to a friend.”

Hamid smiled in the rearview mirror. “This is why I love my job. Every tour, I meet new friends from around the world.”

Tangier offered one final surprise—a city where Africa and Europe seemed to dance together. From the Kasbah, they could see Spain across the Strait of Gibraltar, their next stop.

Day 11: Departure – More Than a Trip

At the ferry terminal, Hamid helped them with their luggage one last time. “Thank you,” he said simply, “for letting me share my country with you.”

The goodbyes were harder than expected. Over eleven days, this man had become their guide, their protector, their cultural bridge, and their friend. He’d learned what they liked, changed their schedule when they were tired, and shared his Morocco with real pride and passion.

As the ferry pulled away from Tangier, Tom and Sarah stood on deck watching Morocco’s coastline fade into the distance. In their hands were business cards—not just Hamid’s, but also Jill’s emergency number, which they’d never needed to use again after that first day.

“So,” Tom asked, “what did you think of our first trip to North Africa?”

Sarah was quiet for a moment, watching the Atlas Mountains disappear into the haze. “I think,” she said finally, “we’re going to have to come back. There’s still so much to see.”

Tom nodded, already thinking about their next adventure. But he knew that whatever they did next, it would be measured against these eleven perfect days in Morocco.
