We had a GREAT trip. The more rural/cultural and outdoor focus of our trip was most to our liking. The major highlights (for all, I believe) were the Todra Gorge hike with a local guide, the camel trek into the desert, the day/night stay at the Berber Cultural Center. Hamid also led us to an area south of Essaouira to hike a bit in a Thuya area and to do a beach walk. We much enjoyed two village market days – one in Tnine on the way to the Ourika hike, and in Rissani. We found the scenery breathtaking and diverse from mountains to desert to ocean. We found the culture diverse also, and wished for more language skills to interact better with the “real” people we met. Maybe surprisingly, the larger souks (Marrakech, Essaouira) were only OK.
Our driver, Hamid, did excellent work for us. He was prompt (save for the initial airport transfer), courteous/friendly, a safe driver (-he saved us all from one potentially serious road accident), and knowledgable about our sites for the most part. Maybe because of language ? – there were a few times when we were not sure where or why we headed, but these proved inconsequential.
Perhaps, because we are not avid shoppers, the number of stops at “cooperative” outlets for displays and potential purchase seemed a bit excessive. Our stop in Ouarzazate for a hamman/massage experience was good for the ladies, but not so for the men (only Bob did the local hamman). There was much confusion at the hamman as the massage place “lost” its service person at the hamman because of a “lunch break”. Bob did receive a free upper shoulder/neck massage though.
We did a silly little survey of ourselves at the end and came up with the following hotel rankings, from best to least best: Riad Yasmine, Riad Irocha, Kasbah Xaluca Dades, Riad Mimouna, Hotel Maamora, Kasbah Lamrani, Kasbah Tizimi. Tizimi had issues with a door lock and a wet bathroom. Otherwise, we enjoyed the accommodations much, especially the smaller riad facilities. The locations of the riads/hotels were very good indeed, including the one in Casablanca.
