Desert Gate – 8 Days

DAY 1: TUNIS / ARRIVAL
Upon arrival in Tunis, the capital of Tunisia, you will be met and transferred by bus to your hotel. After check in, enjoy dinner and rest for the night.

DAY 2: TUNIS / CARTHAGE / SIDI BOU SAID
After breakfast, the group will depart for a visit to the Bardo Museum. This museum is well known for its large collection of intricate mosaics and vestiges of the greatest civilizations known in Tunisian history. After the museum visit, we continue to the médina, (the old walled city), where we explore the .souk., or traditional market. This market is colored by many products of skilled North African craftsmen, such as copper, leather, wool, and beautifully woven carpets. After lunch in the mid-afternoon, we visit the ancient archaeological site of Carthage, once the largest city in northern Africa. This site holds ruins from many eras of history, such as the Punic, Roman, Vandal and Byzantine eras. We then continue to the quaint village of Sidi Bou Said located on several hills overlooking the Mediterranean sea. We explore its beautifully paved lanes and many breathtaking sea views.

DAY 3: SOUSSE / PORT EL KANTAOUI / MONASTIR / EL DJEM / SFAX (280 KM)
After an early breakfast, we depart for the seaside touristic cities of Sousse and Port El Kantaoui. The ancient medina of Sousse is well known for its historic fortress and high look-out tower, as well as its amazing souks. Port El Kantaoui hosts a beautiful marina. After lunch, we will depart for Monastir for a visit to the Bourguiba Mausoleum and from there, continue to El Djem to explore an amazingly well preserved Roman Coliseum. Our tour continues towards the south to Sfax, the second largest economic city in Tunisia surrounded by an expansive agricultural area populated by olive trees. Here we have our dinner and rest for the night.

DAY 4: GABES / DJERBA ISLAND / TATAOUINE (350 KM)
After breakfast, our tour departs from Sfax to Djerba via Gabes (a maritime oases) with a visit to the Jara souks. We continue to Djerba Island and there visit a Jewish Synagogue, the Guellala pottery station, and the city of Houmt Souk in the center of the island. After lunch we continue to the southern city of Tataouine where we will rest for the night.

DAY 5: CHENINI / MATMATA / DOUZ / TOZEUR (380 KM)
After breakfast our tour departs to visit the Berber village of Chenini, built in the colorful red and yellow hills of this desert area. We will then cross the stone desert of Le Reg and continue to the Berber village of Matmata, where we will visit one of the intriguing underground dwellings of the.troglodyte. people. Our tour continues to the desert city of Douz. After lunch our tour has an optional activity of either a walk or camel ride over the sand dunes into the Sahara. Upon return we continue on to cross the dry salt lake Chott El Djerid, with its impressive natural salt creations, arriving in Tozeur for dinner and rest for the night.

DAY 6: TOZEUR / NEFTA / GAFSA (150 KM)
After breakfast, the group will have a free morning for resting or an optional activity by 4×4. For whoever chooses, the optional activity is to visit Ong Gamel, a large camel shaped mountain ridge among the sand dunes of the Sahara. Along with this, there will be a visit to the desert site of one of the Star Wars films. After lunch our tour will continue to the surprising green lush oasis of Nefta, the largest oasis in southern Tunisia. Later in the afternoon we depart for Gafsa where we will have dinner and rest for the night.

DAY 7: SBEITLA / KAIROUAN / TUNIS (420 KM)
After breakfast, our tour departs for the archaeological site of Sbeitla. This site prese nts well preserved ruins such as temples, beautiful baptistries, a thermal complex, a triumphal arch and forts dating back to the Byzantine period. Sbeitla also hosts an original antiquities museum to display their many beautiful excavated objects. Our tour continues to Kairouan, a city known for its mosques and world famous carpet making craft industry. The grand mosque Okba Ibn Nafaa, and the mausoleum of the barber companion of the prophet Mohammed, are two
of the city’s religious sites. After lunch we will visit a carpet making workshop observing the detailed handskills of the carpet makers and how the designs are created. Later we will return to Tunis for dinner and rest for the night.

DAY 8: TUNIS / DEPARTURE
After breakfast, you will be transferred by bus to the airport for departure.

Discovering the Dunes – 8 Days

8 days / 7 nights

Day 1

Morning departure by 4X4 from El Faouar into the desert towards R’lelet Jaloul to rendez-vous with our camel drivers. Once the luggage is loaded on the dromedaries, our Sahara Desert experience begins. Led by experienced camel drivers we hike towards Martoum Sacslimen with a stop for lunch. The evening bivouac will take place in Zmlet Zraïb. *Bivouac: open air camping

Day 2

After breakfast, our desert experience continues with our morning hike to Mohammed Esseley. Lunch will take place near this local holy man’s tomb. The afternoon hike will lead us towards the long dunes of Chrah el Matar where we camp for the night.

Day 3

Many dunes are on the menu for this morning! Lunch will take place at Rajem el Hamdiya. After a short afternoon nap, we will hike cross a *dry river bed to reach the evening bivouac place of El Faraï. *Dry river bed: oued

Day 4

Today refreshing sweet cool waters await us at our lunch break at Bir Azet’s well. Our continued hike will take us through the middle of high dunes and bring us to the night bivouac site of Bir Ben Abdallah.

Day 5

Another day’s hike amidst high dunes. Lunch will take place near the Laghou oued and the night bivouac will be set up at Ettouayel Essabria. This evening, as well as every evening in the desert, we can enjoy the amazingly clear display of night stars and the quiet serine calm of the desert.

Day 6

Lunch will take place on the small dunes at Zmlet 27. The evening bivouac will be at Ahla’nda Lachichina surrounded by tamaris (date) trees.

Day 7

Lunch will be near Bir Boubaker’s well. On this last evening in the desert, join in the evening’s bivouac activities by helping pick up wood for the fire, setting up the tent and help prepare the meal. This evening is spent at Cherb el Raïss.

Day 8

Our last morning in the desert, we will hike to Bir Boukaba’s well for lunch and rendez-vous with the 4×4 vehicles. We will travel the desert trail by 4×4 for half an hour before joining the road to Tozeur.

Sahara Backpack Tour

4 Days / 3 Nights

Day 1
Meet at the El Faouar Hotel in the late morning. Once the dromedaries are loaded, we begin our camel trekinto the beautiful Sahara Desert. We’ll stop for lunch near some tamaris trees (date trees) and then later camp will be set up amongst the large dunes at Mergeb Tergui. Dinner will be our first meal under the stars and the night will be spent in nomadic tents.

Day 2
Today will be your first full day to enjoy the peaceful quiet of the Sahara. Rest your mind and thoughts as you walk along drinking in the beauty of the vast desert dunes. There is no rush, but just the nonchalant pace of the dromedaries stopping here or there to munch on some desert weeds. Which precise path should we take? Never mind the exact route, the desert is ours to enjoy. Our guide will find a nice place to have lunch under the shade of a tree and then we continue on to the area of Ah’chichina to find a pleasant place to camp for the night.

Day 3
Beautiful desert dunes await you for the day. Discover the serentity of life in the desert as you continue to explore and take in its vast beauty. This evening’s dinner is an opportunity for team building. After enjoying the sunset with its incredible mauve hues that fire up the Eastern sky, you can help prepare for the evening activities by picking up wood, setting up the tents, and preparing the meal. Dinner will take place around the campfire. The evening carries on with camel drivers’ songs accompanied by music with drums and the traditional bendir instrument. Camp will be set up at Wahed el Mechba.

Day 4
Rise and enjoy our last breakfast together, then hike to Bir R’med where we will rendez-vous with our 4×4. Our departure and return trip will be in the early afternoon on the trail towards El Faouar.

KSAR GHILANE – 1 DAY – $85 per person (min. 4 people)
Departure from your hotel in Djerba at 6:30am towards Toujane. This is an ideal place for great photos with its houses spread around a hillside above a Kasbah.

After a brief photo stop at Toujane continue towards Matmata. This town is known for its troglodyte (cave) dwellings – underground houses in half-moon shapes. This is also the site where some scenes of Star Wars were shot.

Departure towards Ksar Ghilaine via Tamezret. This village overlooks the Nefzaoua plains. Lunch will be enjoyed in a camp in Ghilaine. Ksar Ghilane is a large oasis of about 140km. This is where many scenes from the film The English Patient were shot. It is possible to swim in the hot springs or to stroll on camel back for a better view.

We then return towards the Medenine to visit the “ghorfas” (arched buildings with various levels which were used for storing grain.)

Continue to hotels in Djerba via the Roman roadway.

The Djerba Island Tour

HALF DAY TOUR- $25 per person (4 or more people)

This tour will take you from your hotel to the Roman Causeway, the Museum of Patrimony, the El Griba Synagogue and the Spanish port.

Roman Causeway
This is the only direct link the island has with the mainland – it was constructed in by the Romans.

Guellala
Guellala is known as the village of potters – known for its traditional unglazed pottery and famous furnaces of wood, its oil presses and its museum. The Heritage Museum (Museum of Patrimony) encourages appreciation of the treasures and wonders of the island’s traditional life.

Erriedh
This little village has a Jewish community, who lived on this island for 100s of years. The El Ghriba Synagogue is the oldest outside of Israel and posesses one of the most ancient Torahs in the world. A real wonder in this setting.

Houmt-Souk (main town on Dherba)
The foundations of this Spanish port was laid in the sixteenth century. A visit the local arts and crafts shops (souks) is a must. Memorabilia to take to friends and family can be bartered in a fun way.

The Great Sahara – 3 Days

DJERBA – MATMATA -DOUZ- TOZEUR – $205 per person (min. 4 people)
Day 1: Djerba-Tatouine-Chenini-Douiret-Ksar Ghilane
Depart from Jerba around 08h00 for the town of Tatouine via the Roman Causeway. Visit of the market of spices enroute to Chenini. Visit the Douiret lodge then have Lunch. Continue towards Ksar Ghilane, a large oasis of about 140km. This is also where many scenes from the film The English Patient were shot. This will be our destination for the evening – a camping site with Bedouin tents. An evening meal will be served to nourish and relax while enjoying the vastness of the desert.

Day 2: Ksar Ghilane-Douz-Tozeur
Leave after breakfast to visit a natural hot water source. Continue towards the town of Douz. Visit the market to appreciate local craftmanship. Continue through Chott El Jerid towards Tozeur. Visit the oasis in Tozeur. Sleep over in a 3-star hotel.

Day 3: Tozeur-Chebika-Tamerza-Kebili-Matmata-Djerba
Depart for Chebika and Tamerza. Visit the Oasis de Montagnes (Mountains), the large Cascades and the Canyons of Mides. Return to Kebili for lunch. Continue to Matmata, that is known for its troglodyte (cave) dwellings -underground houses in half-moon shapes. This is also the site where some scenes from Star Wars were shot.

Return to Jerba via the ferry at Ajim.

Arrive at your hotel around 18h30.

The Grand Erg Oriental

KSAR GHILANE – 1 NIGHT 2 DAYS – $125 per person (min 4 people)

DAY 1
Departure is from your hotel in Djerba at 6:30 towards Medinine via the Roman Causeway. Visit the “ghorfas” (arched buildings of various levels which were used for storing grain.) Also of interest will be a visit to original Berber villages and sites.
Lunch will be enjoyed in a typical troglodytic (cae-like) house. After lunch continue towards Ksar Ghilane via a sand trail, crossing part of the desert. Ksar Ghilane is a large oasis of about 140km. This is where many scenes from the film The English Patient was shot. You can choose to either swim in the hot springs or marvel at the red sand dunes from the back of a camel. The evening meal will be served in a Berber tent in Ksar Ghilane.

DAY 2
The morning departure is via a different sand trail towards Tataouine (centre known for its spices.) Here lunch will be enjoyed in a restaurant. Other Berber villages will also be visited in Chenini (known for its hill villages) and Douiret .
Return to Jerba via the ferry at Ajim.

Planet Tataouine – Chenini

1 Day Excursion – $60 per person (min 4 people)
Depart for the Medenine via the Roman causeway. Stop on the way for about 15 min at the Sabkhet el Melh (a small salt lake).
Visit of Ghorfas, (old strengthened attics) in the Medenine.

Depart for Tataouine. Stop at the Bat d’Af. Visit markets for about 45 min. At Tatouine one can enjoy the ksour and the hills. Lunch will be served at a 3-star hotel in Tataouine.

After lunch continue towards Chenini, an orginal Berber village including ruins of the orginal kalaa (Berber hill fort) which dates back to about 12 AD. Proceed to Ksar Haddada. (45 min stop). Here you can explore the small alleyways and courtyards. It is also here where some scenes of Star Wars IV – A New Hope was shot. Depart for Medenine via the Elkhil Wadi sand trail. A short tea break. Return to the hotel via the ferry at Ajim.
