Discover Morocco - 3 weeks
Sample Itinerary |

Depart
Depart from Newark
International Airport,
New Jersey
for an overnight flight to Casablanca via Europe.
Day 1
Casablanca
Upon arrival in
Casablanca,
the economic capital of Morocco, you will be met
and transferred to your
Casablanca
hotel, where you will check in and relax for the afternoon.
Day 2 Fes
After breakfast, the
group will leave by van towards Fes, a 4 hour ride. Upon arrival in Fes,
you will check into your hotel and have a time of orientation to the city.
Dinner will be served in a local restaurant overlooking the famous Bab Bou
Jeloud.

Day 3 Fes
After breakfast, you will
go to DMG, the language school, for a 3-hour introductory explorer language
course. The students will learn some basic greetings and phrases that will
equip them for their stay in
Morocco.
A traditional Moroccan meal will be served after the lessons by DMG. In the
afternoon, students can choose from an optional tour of one of the local
museums or a traditional Berber carpet demonstration.
Day 4 Fes
After breakfast the group
will begin a guided tour of the medina, one of the world’s largest walled in
cities. You will explore the narrow streets lined with fresh fruit, mounds
of spices, exquisite Berber carpets and many other objects of Morocco. A
visit to the Kings
Palace,
the tanneries, and potters are just a few places we will experience. For
lunch we will eat in traditional restaurant in the heart of the medina.
After lunch we will complete the tour and return to our hotel for the
evening

Day 5 Fes
After breakfast the group
will enjoy a 2-hour lecture on Moroccan culture by local university
professor. The afternoon will be set aside for free time where
students can complete their cultural observations.
Day 6
Volubolis / Meknes
After an early breakfast,
we will set out in the morning to the ancient Roman ruins of Volubolis. We
will spend the morning exploring the 2000-year-old ruins and getting a
picture of life during the Roman Empire. Lunch will be taken in Mulay Idris,
one of the holiest cities in Morocco. After lunch, your guide will take you
on a bus tour of the imperial city,
Meknes.
Day 7 Fes
In the morning the students
will have a 2-hour lecture on the religion of Islam. The afternoon could be
a free time for students to explore by themselves…or we could offer another
cultural lecture or language time. |

Day 8 Fes
In the morning the group
will visit a beautifully restored castle and hear a lecture on Moroccan
artesian, given by one of
Fes' finest craftsmen. We will enjoy a barbeque lunch at
the old restored palace. After lunch, our host will entertain
questions on current events, religion or politics.
Day 9 Fes
The last day in Fes will be
left open for shopping and visiting the friends that you have made over the
first week.
Day 10 Erfoud
After an early breakfast
we will begin our ascent across the Middle Atlas Mountains. Most of the day
will be spent winding our way through the beautiful forests, jagged rock
faces, and Berber villages as we cross the Atlas Mountains and begin to
descend towards the Sahara Desert. Half way, we will stop for lunch in the
town of Midelt, famous for its fossils and rocks. On arrival at the Kasbah
Tizimi in Erfoud, a hot shower or dip in the swimming pool (depending on the
weather) will be a treat after the drive.

Day 11 Sahara
Desert
Most of the day will be
spent relaxing at the hotel or taking a walk into the small but interesting
desert town. In the afternoon, we will head off in some 4-wheel drive
vehicles across the barren land to the majestic
Sahara sand dunes. We will set off by camel for a 2-hour trek out
to the oasis where we will spend the night in Berber tents. ***this could be
optional if some students are not up to this***
Day 12 Todra
Gorges/ Ouarzazate
From Erfoud we set out
behind the High Atlas Mountains on route to Ouarzazate. We will stop to
take a walk up in the towering Todra Gorges (600 feet high). The
picturesque river valleys make for a beautiful journey towards the southeast
of Morocco.
We will stay the night in Ouarzazate before we cross the High Atlas
Mountains.

Day 13
Marrakech
After breakfast we will drive 20 km to Aït Benhaddou, one of
the world's most magnificent kasbahs. Tucked away in the High Atlas
Mountains, it is one of the jewels of
Morocco. In typical
Moroccan fashion, the true treasures must be searched out and
discovered...usually off the beaten path. In actuality, this setting has
been used for more films than any other location in
Morocco;
films including,
Lawrence of Arabia, Jesus of Nazareth,
and recently The Gladiator.
Once in Marrakech, we will
check into our hotel and then head off to the Djemaa el-Fna, the center
square of the medina. The famous Djemaa el-Fna, is one of the center
attractions of Marrakech. Coming alive at night with the local
storytellers, entertainers, and mouth-watering barbeque pits, the square is
well worth a visit. A quiet cup of tea on the terrace of an adjacent café
provides a spectacular aerial view of the bustling square. Dinner can be
taken in the hotel or in the square.
Day 14 The Day
in the Life of a Berber
After breakfast, the group
will set off to a Berber village to enjoy a truly cultural experience…The
Day in the Life of a Berber. The students will learn first hand by
collecting water from the well, cooking lunch, brewing Berber mint tea, and
sleeping in a Berber house.
Day 15
Marrakech
After breakfast, we will
head back to Marrakech to take pleasure in a day touring the city. A horse
and carriage ride around the city is a relaxing way to take in the ancient
city.

Day 16
Essaouira
We will set out after
breakfast to Essaouira, a picturesque
fishing town, lies on the southwest coast of Morocco. With an exquisite
beach to the south, Essaouira has become one of Morocco's most popular
coastal towns. Many of the countries wood carvers and artists make
Essaouira their home.
Day 17
Essaouira
We will spend a second day
in Essaouria debriefing and enjoying the quite town, walking the beach or
eating the fresh seafood of the day.
Day 18
Casablanca
Our last day of travel will
take us back to Casablanca along the beautiful scenic coastal road. Lunch will be
found along the way and we will have dinner at the hotel or in a nice
restaurant in the city. If time permits, some may want to take a walk or
taxi ride to see the Hassan II, one of the world's biggest mosques.
